چکیده

Assume that voters’ beliefs after observing liberal and moderate signals during the general election campaign are the same, that is, pCh 2 (μ) = p Ch 2 (λ) and W (p Ch 2 (μ)) −W (pCh 2 (λ)) = 0. In this case, both types of challengers would choose zero effort, which means that signals are perfectly informative and we must have pCh 2 (μ) = 1 and p Ch 2 (λ) = 0. Thus, p Ch 2 (μ) 6= pCh 2 (λ). Assume next that pCh 2 (μ) < p Ch 2 (λ) then using Claim 1 we obtain W (p Ch 2 (μ))−W (pCh 2 (λ)) < 0. In this case, liberal challenger will exert zero effort, in which case moderate signal would fully reveal a moderate challenger pCh 2 (μ) = 1. In that case, we obtain W (p Ch 2 (μ))−W (pCh 2 (λ)) > 0, which contradicts our assumption above.

Flip-Flopping, Intense Primaries and the Selection of Candidates∗

We present a model of two-stage elections in which candidates can choose different platforms in primaries and general elections. Voters do not directly observe the chosen platforms, but rather infer the candidates’ ideologies from signals made during the campaign (debates, speeches), where a larger number of signals corresponds to a higher-intensity campaign. This model captures two patterns: (...

Flip-flopping: Ideological Adjustment Costs in the United States Senate

Using a long panel of roll call voting data, I find that “flip-flopping” senators face significant electoral costs when changing positions. In models of electoral competition, as the costs to candidates changing position approach zero, the equilibrium prediction is the convergence of platforms. Such convergence is at odds with empirical observation. Using a dynamic, structural model of candidat...

Dynamics and energetics of Ge(001) dimers.

The dynamic behavior of surface dimers on Ge(001) has been studied by positioning the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope over single flip-flopping dimers and measuring the tunneling current as a function of time. We observe that not just symmetric, but also asymmetric appearing dimers exhibit flip-flop motion. The dynamics of flip-flopping dimers can be used to sensitively gauge the local p...

Epileptic seizure detection based on The Limited Penetrable visibility graph algorithm and graph properties

Introduction: Epileptic seizure detection is a key step for both researchers and epilepsy specialists for epilepsy assessment due to the non-stationariness and chaos in the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Current research is directed toward the development of an efficient method for epilepsy or seizure detection based the limited penetrable visibility graph (LPVG) algorith...

Atomically resolved local variation of the barrier height of the flip-flop motion of single buckled dimers of Si(100).

The dynamics of the flip-flop motion of single buckled dimers of Si(100) was elucidated by locating the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope over a single flip-flopping dimer and measuring the tunneling current (time trace). Based on a statistical analysis of the time trace, we succeeded in estimating the activation energy and the energy splitting between the two stable configurations of buck...
